Sometimes, when our school community gathers for events like our Veterans Day Breakfast, Drama Club productions, athletic contests and certainly at our graduation ceremonies, it’s easy to forget how young our school district is.
The reality is, Unadilla Valley is one of the newer school districts in New York state. Our Pre-K through Grade 12 school building is one of the most recently built school buildings from Binghamton to Albany to Syracuse.
Recognizing the world around them was changing, Unadilla Valley started as a vision of residents of the former South New Berlin and New Berlin school districts to provide area students with the best opportunities we could, given the challenges of rural education. Never a foregone conclusion, the merger that created Unadilla Valley in 1996 - and eventually our school building - was the result of a lot of research, hard work and debate.
This spring we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the opening of our school building with a Diamond Jubilee from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 7. We hope you can attend the festivities, which will include refreshments and reflections from those involved with the creation of Unadilla Valley.
The world is a different place from that day in January 2003 when our school building’s doors first opened. It’s a more complicated place. As times change, the way we educate our children has also changed. School buildings also need regular maintenance and upgrades to keep them operating efficiently. We thank all of the district residents who participated not only in the process to create Unadilla Valley in the 1990s; but also those who turned out for capital improvement project votes in 2014, 2018 and, most recently, this past December.
Our goal is to not only keep the original vision of Unadilla Valley’s founders alive, but also continue to grow and adapt for the future.
Sincerely,
Brenton S. Taylor
