A monthly reading challenge to encourage a love of books resulted in a third grade class having every single student get a library card.
Students in Mrs. Osborne's class complete a range of reading activities, including a daily reading log. Their challenge for October was to get the Four County Library System library card. The Four County Library System (4CLS) provides consolidated library services to 42 member libraries in Broome, Chenango, Delaware, and Otsego County.
The South New Berlin Free Library helped by providing the class with applications and Mrs. Osborne, sent the forms home with students. All 18 students in her class returned the form and they were all issued new library cards
As a reward, the students Mrs. Osborne’s class received a VIP visit to the South New Berlin Free Library!
During their visit on Nov. 28, the students explored the upstairs museum and learned about many of the artifacts, including antique farming equipment, Native American projectile points, the former South New Berlin School, fire department memorabilia and more.
“A lot of them had never been there before,” Mrs. Osborne said.
The hope is the library cards, which can be used at other area libraries, will help open new reading opportunities for them.
“It gives them that power of being a reader,” she said. “We will continue to help them utilize the libraries.”
Great job students and thank you Mrs. Osborne and the South New Berlin Free Library.
