Good afternoon,
An elementary student found an empty .22 rifle casing on the playground today (Monday, Jan. 8) and immediately notified school staff. Our school resource officer responded to the playground and secured the casing.
Our SRO and school administrators are following all of our district procedures to fully address the matter. This includes reviewing camera footage, and follow-up interviews with staff and students.
There have been other instances in recent weeks of empty ammunition casings being found at the school. None of these situations involved any threat to our school community. In the coming days members of our staff will be meeting with students to educate them about the importance of not bringing prohibited items to school. These include empty ammunition casings.
While we understand that hunting and target shooting are valued pastimes practiced by many of our families, we need to ensure that expended casings or live rounds are not inadvertently brought onto school property.
Thank you to staff, families, and students for always working with us to create a safe environment for everyone.
Thank you,
Brenton S. Taylor, Superintendent
