A classing coming-of-age story is set for the Unadilla Valley auditorium stage this weekend.
The UV Drama Club will perform The Outsiders at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6, and 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7.
Adapted for the stage by Christopher Sergel from the classic S. E. Hinton novel, The Outsiders tells the story of rival teenage gangs in 1960sTulsa, Oklahoma. The Greasers come from troubled working-class backgrounds, contrasted with the Socials, whose members are from upper-middle-class families. Like the novel, the play centers on 14-year-old Ponyboy Curtis, a member of the Greasers gang, as he recounts the violent aftermath after his friend Johnny fatally stabbed Socials member Bob. While the novel and popular film version feature violence, the adaptation keeps that element largely off-stage and instead focuses on the relationships between the characters and social status.
The UV drama club currently has 37 members; 11 backstage members along with 26 actors from grades 7-12.
“So far there have been well over 200 hours put into this production between rehearsal time as well as the time spent working on the set and props,” said Drama Club Advisor Alex Morgan. “The students performed a sneak peak at the Student of the Month assemblies last month to showcase some of the work that they have done.”
The Outsiders is being produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock, Illinois.
Tickets for students and seniors are $5 and adults are $8.
